From fairest creatures we desire increase,   

That thereby beauty's rose might never die,

Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,  

Making a famine where abundance lies,

Pity the world, or else this glutton be,     

To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

十四行诗，又译“商籁体，”为意大利文sonetto，英文Sonnet、法文sonnet的音译。是欧洲一种格律严谨的抒情诗体。最初流行于意大利，彼特拉克的创作使其臻于完美，又称“彼特拉克体”，后传到欧洲各国。最具代表性的就是莎士比亚的诗作，他改变了彼得拉克的格式，由三段四行和一副对句组成，即按四、四、四、二编排，每行诗句有10个抑扬格音节。以形象生动、结构巧妙、音乐性强、起承转合自如为特色，常常在最后一副对句中概括内容，点明主题，表达出新兴资产阶级的理想和情怀。
