英语学习：辣眼睛怎么表达？

当我们看到不该看、不好看的事物时，时常都会用“辣眼睛”这个词汇来表达自己内心的感受，但是你知道在英语中“辣眼睛”怎么表达吗？

1. Hard on the eyes

看到后感到对眼睛是种折磨，是不是有点儿“辣眼”的意味？这个词组正好说明“不好看”。

例：Personally, I think Tom's new girlfriend is a little hard on the eyes.

我个人觉得汤姆的女友不太好看。

2. Face only a mother could love

俗话说得好“儿不嫌母丑”，反过来妈妈们看自家宝贝也都格外顺眼。可要是说谁长了一张只有妈妈会喜欢的脸，那看来是除了亲妈真没别人能看上了。

例：The poor baby has a face only a mother could love.

可怜的娃长得实在不太好看，也就他妈妈喜欢他。

3. Thin on top

除了空气越往上越稀薄，头顶的头发也有可能变少哟~ 这个说人“谢顶”的表达也是够婉转了。 

例：James is wearing a hat because he's getting thin on top.

詹姆斯戴了顶帽子，因为他开始谢顶了。

4. Vertically1 challenged

从字面上看，这个表达是说垂直上遭遇了挑战，要是用来形容人的话，横看竖看也只能是在讨论身高了。这个短语其实就是说人short嘛……

例：Whenever anyone teases2 me about my height, I just tell them that I'm vertically challenged!

每当有人嘲笑我的身高时，我就对他们说这叫纵向不足。

5. Down-at-heel

除了身材长相，一个人的穿着和精气神也会给人留下深刻的印象。这个短语看上去是在说“低至脚后跟”，实际上指的是看起来邋遢、潦倒。

例：When I first met him, he looked down-at-heel.

我头次见他时，他看上去很潦倒。
