Root around 翻找，翻寻

root的本意是根、根源，做动词表达翻找、翻寻，这个短语尤指在其他物品中寻找，搜寻。

She rooted through/among the papers on her desk.
她在桌上的文件中翻来翻去地找东西。

·Poke around 搜索；翻找

poke主要指用手指、工具或器具去“戳，刺，捅”，如果你想说“扎心了，老铁”，就可以来一句You poked my heart！

I was poking around in the drawer, looking for the key, when I found this!
我在抽屉里翻来翻去找钥匙，就在这时找到了这个！

· Rummage 翻找，翻寻，乱翻

rummage常和in/through搭配，形容翻箱倒柜地寻找。

She rummaged in/through all the drawers, looking for a pen.
她把所有抽屉都翻了个遍，想找支笔。


Turn sth upside down 将…翻了个底朝天

这个短语指你搜遍了整个角落，常常还留下一片狼藉。

I turned the apartment upside down but I couldn't find the letter.

Rifle 迅速翻查；匆忙翻找

rifle就是“来福枪；步枪”的意思，当它用作动词，就表示匆忙翻找某物，经常指偷盗行为。

Trawl 搜寻；网罗

trawl表示搜寻的时候，指的是为了得到自己想要的而搜寻大量的信息。

· Forage 搜寻

forage的本意是“粮草；饲料”，作动词尤指四处寻找食物。

The children had been living on the streets, foraging for scraps.
那些孩子露宿街头，四处寻找残羹剩饭。

· Like finding a needle in a haystack. 大海捞针

haystack是干草堆的意思，在草堆里找针（needle），不就是大海捞针嘛！
