MARIAN Lenehan, an Irishwoman who has taught at GLV for three years, met with compatriot Clare Lynch, who has lived in Zhuhai with her family for almost eight years, at the Blarney Stone Irish Pub of the Holiday Inn in Jida on Wednesday evening to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, which falls on March 17.

The Irish Pub, bedecked with wooden furnishings and Irish pictures, was festive with St Patrick’s Day decorations such as a cotton cloth poster, Ireland’s national symbol the shamrock, and green cloth banners stating St Patrick’s Day hanging on the wall. The poster and the ornaments were contributed by Irish customers who had purchased them in Ireland, according to Holiday Inn Public Relationship Officer Betty Wang.

St Patrick (385-461CE) brought Christianity to Ireland and allegedly drove the snakes out of the country. He is like a father to many Irish people, and so they celebrate the day every year in his honor.

“We’ll always remember St Patrick, as he was the special saint of Ireland back in the 5th century and he came to Ireland with many wonderful things. He’s a patron of our country and many buildings throughout the world tonight are going to be lit in green, which is our favorite color,” Marian said.

For example, she pointed out, the lights in London are all green and five famous buildings in the world are also green with light on this festive day. Clare added that in America, the Chicago River also gets dyed green every year.

Marian was wearing a short-sleeved green print shirt while Clare had green knitwear on top. “Usually we wear one thing green on St Patrick’s Day,” Marian said.

Each of the two Irishwomen ordered a glass of Guinness stout beer, which was produced in Ireland and imported in Shanghai.

“Guinness is famous for its black and thick white cream head. When you pour it properly, you always have a head,” Marian explained, regretting that the head was too thin in her glass. She confessed to drinking only one glass each time whereas Irish men would drink several. She added that the beer is very good for health though it might engender a beer belly if one were to quaff it immoderately.

People wore green hats or those in the shape of an octopus on the day last year. This year, however, Marian said that when she came back from a half-year break in Ireland, she had brought a green T-shirt with an Irish logo for her son Mark and a traditional Irish dress for herself, which she would wear on Saturday at another St Patrick’s Day celebration at 5th Bar opposite Nanyou Hotel in Shuiwantou of Gongbei.

Despite the festive atmosphere and Irish decorations, the music was wrong, said Marian. Traditional Irish music has a variety of fast and slow music which would make the Irish feel like dancing and folk songs similar to those in Xinjiang, but the three-member Filipino live band, Free Wave Band, sang mostly western pop.

Now that St Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, government offices, banks and schools are closed, Marian said. People are on the street, in their houses or at the bars, listening to music and having fun.

In America, the Irish parade all day, whereas in Ireland, the parade lasts only a couple of hours and then everyone goes to a bar, Megan Keough, a young American working at Beijing Normal University Zhuhai, explained.

An American with Irish roots, Megan was excited to meet Marian and Clare at the pub. They immediately began to exchange conversations about the holiday.

After half a year in Zhuhai, Megan regrets that the Chinese do not know of the day and she has to keep telling teachers and students in her university and children in the kindergarten she teaches. She also mentioned the differences of celebrating the day in China, saying the biggest one is the music –no Irish music.

In western countries, people usually celebrate with music and dance, just getting together to remember they’re Irish, as there are many Irish people all over the world, Marian noted.” When you’re away from Ireland, the day becomes more important because it’s an opportunity to get together.”

Clare said her family celebrates at home every year. “We play Irish music and sing Irish songs all day, and my daughter cooks an Irish meal,” she smiled.

Actually, the live band knew about St Patrick’s Day upon their arrival in Zhuhai from Xiamen, Fujian Province, last Monday. They had performed two last months at the Scotland Pub in Xiamen before they came to initiate a three month contract every night except Sundays. Immediately they searched the Internet and found some songs of Irish artists. They had learned nearly 20 Irish songs and rehearsed for the performance, soloist Rachel Verano Delapena said.

It seems that there are fewer than 20 Irish nationals in Zhuhai while the numbers are much greater in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other metropolises in China. Alas, though, ‘tis a crying shame that in not one of these fine cities were the Leprechaun and his pot of gold to be seen.
